I have a 2001 nissan frontier that i have been thinking about doing a rear mount turbo setup  like the sts kits.  I already have the turbo its out of a 1980 3.0L mercedes TA0314.  I don't know much about turbos but i have taken it apart to check the fins and bearings i believe and the fins are perfect all there and not bent, but how much play is there supposed to be, are you supposed to be able to spin it freely or have to turn it every time you want it to turn?  I have a bunch more questions if anyone wants to help me this will just tell me if the turbo i have is any good.   Thanks

how easy is it spinning?  its supposed to be a little loose but it shouldnt be spinning for very long after you spin it by hand

it wont spin feely if i spin it by hand, it has been sitting for awhile but i dont think lube alone will help that much.  Since i dont know much about turbos what oil system do people typically run on aftermarket turbo systems, on vehicles that dont come with turbos,is just tapping the pan for a feed and return line enough?  im not looking for much power gain just a little, im trying to make it a cheap project that will be cool and something to talk about

First off I`d suggest doing a little more research into the way the sts system is run...
Secondly, you would have to tap an oil passage to feed the turbo(maybe at an oil gauge fitting)and a pump system to get it back to the tap in the oil pan, and you would probably need to do the same for the coolant to have a complete circle of fluid..
Third,the turbo you have may be dry internally, don`t do too much with it before you get some sorta lubricate in on the bearings, and there should be very little play, side-to-side .
The sts system would probably give you 50-100 more horses, can your engine handle it and most importantly, can your trans.?
Although the sts system looks simple, there`s a lot of engineering that has to be done, if you want a favorable result.
Did I mention more fuel? Gonna have to work that in too.

yeah i have looked a lot about the system i just dont know a whole lot about the turbos.  they make a remote oil filter kit that im looking at to tap into for the supply since its pressurized i was hoping not to have to get a oil pump for the return since they arent cheap it doesnt need coolant and yeah my engine and trans can handel the power as far as the fuel im not sure thats why im asking more knowlegeble people.

Coincidently, an episode on Trucks this weekend was about such a Turbo install, I think you can go to the web-site and view it.
You will have to have some sort of engine/fuel management system to regulate the A/F.
You may spend as much on a home built system as you would a STS set-up. But have fun.
